What is Romanticism?

Romanticism was a 19th century artistic movement in literature, the visual arts and painting.  It followed the Neoclassical era (the Classical era in music) of the late 18th century.  While romanticism in literature and the visual arts faded in the mid 18th century, romanticism in music lasted into the early 20th century.

Romanticism can be seen as a reaction to the neoclassical Age of Enlightenment of the late 18th century philosophy.  The Enlightenment's focus on objective reason, logic, objectivity, science, and creating universal recipes for the amelioration of mankind was seen as "icy rationalism" to many romantics.
